Eligibility and Accessibility
1. London International Choral Conducting Competition (LICCC) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and is presenting, on Thursday 31st October, Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd November 2024, the London International Choral Conducting Competition 2024. The competition is open to conductors of all nationalities.
2. Conductors who are between 18 and 35 years of age on Thursday 31st October 2024 are invited to apply to take part in the competition.

Application
4. Applications to take part in the competition must be submitted online via the Application Form. Registration is conditional upon completing this form in full and submitting it along with a Registration Fee and three attached documents:

Evaluation and Jury
13. There will be four adjudicated rounds in the competition; Round 1 (Free Choice: Pre-Recorded Video Round), Round 2 (Sacred Music: Professional Choir), Round 3 (UK Women Composers: LICCC Choirs) and Round 4 (International Choral Works: Grand Final). Competitors must participate in all rounds of the competition for which they have qualified and in all rehearsals and concerts.
14. The Jury reserves the right to refuse competitors, interrupt the competition, or exclude a competitor during a round without having to provide justification.
15. Decisions of the Jury are final and beyond appeal.
16. The Jury for Round 1 (Free Choice: Pre-Recorded Video Round) and Round 2 (Sacred Music: Professional Choir) is formed of a national panel of three adjudicators.
17. The Jury for Round 3 (UK Women Composers: LICCC Choirs) and Round 4 (International Choral Works: Grand Final) is formed of an international panel of five adjudicators.
18. The National and International Juries will be marking competitors in all rounds of the competition on the following four key criteria:
19. The National Jury will evaluate the competitors on a point basis of 1 to 100. Whilst the Jurors will endeavour to provide written comments, substantial feedback should not be expected at this stage of the competition.
20. The International Jury will evaluate the competitors on a point basis of 1 to 100, creating a mark out of 100. The overall Jury mark will then be calculated by deleting the highest and the lowest marks of the jurors for each category of the four criteria, and counting together the three middle range marks to create an overall score out of 300. In Round 4 (International Choral Works: Grand Final), separate marks will be given for the adjudicated rehearsals and for the adjudicated concert performance. Both marks will be separately calculated and then summed up.
21. The final Jury mark constitutes 5/6 of the overall final mark.
22. The choirs will also give a mark for each of the competitors in Round 4 (International Choral Works: Grand Final). This will officially be called the ‘Choir Vote’, and will constitute 1/6 of the final marks.
23. The marks from each choir will be summed up and then combined with the marks from the Jury. The resulting sum determines the prizewinning positions.

- Technique: Sound technical competency and clarity/variety of gesture.
- Interpretation: Knowledge of vocal technique, stylistic awareness and application of musical interpretation.
- Communication: Sense of emotional connection to the music/text, strong communication, collaboration and engagement with the choir.
- Rehearsal Skills: Well-planned, effective and well-delivered rehearsal strategies.

Prizes and Awards
24. At the end of the Grand Final the following prizes will be awarded from the concert hall stage, in front of a public audience:
25. All competitors will receive diplomas of participation. The members of the National and International Juries and competition sponsors will present the prizes, diplomas and any special awards.
26. If two competitors produce equal marks, the Jury has the right to divide the prize between the two competitors.
- First Prize – £5000 (GBP)
- Second Prize – £1000 (GBP)
- Additional special prizes from the competition sponsors and partners
25. All competitors will receive diplomas of participation. The members of the National and International Juries and competition sponsors will present the prizes, diplomas and any special awards.

Repertoire
27. The repertoire for Round 1 (Free Choice: Pre-Recorded Video Round) is to be freely chosen by the applicant. At least two, and up to three, pieces of music may be chosen, lasting no more than 10 minutes in total. The titles and composer names must be submitted in the Application Form. The repertoire lists on the LICCC website are a feature of Round 2, Round 3 and Round 4 only, but applicants may present any of these pieces in their video if they wish.
28. The repertoire for Round 2 (Sacred Music: Professional Choir) will be chosen by the applicant, from the Round 2 Repertoire list, and must be submitted in the Application Form. One piece of music only may be chosen.
29. The repertoire for Round 3 (UK Women Composers: LICCC Choirs) and Round 4 (International Choral Works: Grand Final) is detailed on the Repertoire page of the LICCC website. Competitors must prepare all 10 of the Set Pieces, using the specified published editions and must obtain their own scores.
30. Competitors must also prepare a Commissioned Set Piece that will be sent to all Competitors by email one month before the competition event. This will be a new work, commissioned especially for the competition,
31. Scores for the Commissioned Set Piece and all Public Domain pieces on the competition Repertoire Lists will be made available for download without charge.

Round 1: Free Choice - Pre-Recorded Video Round
32. The Pre-recorded video round requires that the applicant submit a video with the Application Form, showing the applicant conducting two contrasting pieces of unaccompanied choral music.
33. The total duration of the video should be no more than 10 minutes. Any video performance in excess of 10 minutes duration may be disqualified.
34. The video must have been recorded within 12 months of making this application.
35. The ensemble in the Pre-recorded video must number at least five singers. The name of the group (if applicable) should be included on the Application Form.
36. The Pre-recorded video must be un-edited material and must not be mastered, mixed or otherwise enhanced in any way by post-production processing. It should be submitted either as a streamed online video on YouTube or Vimeo, or as an attached electronic file in MP4, MOV or AVI format only.
37. The view of the conductor in the video must be full, clear and uninterrupted. The video must clearly show the whole of the conductor (from head to feet) from the front angle, as from the perspective of the singers, and no part of the conducting technique should be obscured by a music stand, by singers or by other visual obstacles.
38. The date on which the video was recorded must be declared in the Application Form.
39. The results of the Pre-recorded video round will be announced via email and on the LICCC website from Friday 28th June 2024.
40. Feedback on video performances will not be provided.
41. Fifteen competitors from the Pre-recorded video round will be selected by the National Jury and contacted to confirm their attendance at the competition in London to compete in Round 2 (Sacred Music: Professional Choir).
42. Once attendance has been confirmed the name, country of residence, photo and biography of each competitor will be published on the LICCC website.

Registration
43. All competitors must register their attendance upon arrival at the competition event in London on Thursday 31st October 2024.
44. At registration the competitor must present a valid passport or ID card to verify their date of birth.
45. No additional registration fee is required for the competition event in London.
46. All competitors must arrive on time and at the venue as indicated by LICCC. In case of absence or lateness, a competitor may be eliminated.
47. Competitors requiring a visa to take part in the Competition are requested to contact the LICCC Administrator as early as possible so that any required letters of invitation may be sent without delay.
44. At registration the competitor must present a valid passport or ID card to verify their date of birth.

Round 2: Sacred Music - Professional Choir
48. Round 2 (Sacred Music: Professional Choir) will take place on Thursday 31st October 2024 at a venue in London. Competitors will be informed by email of the venue details and the time of their adjudicated rehearsal. An overview of the timetable can be found on the Competition Timetable page.
49. Each competitor will conduct an adjudicated rehearsal with professional choir of 16 singers. The professional choir will be familiar with the repertoire prior to the competition and will sing unaccompanied. There will not be a piano accompanist and Competitors should bring their own tuning fork, pitch pipe or similar device for giving pitch.
50. Before the adjudication begins, Competitors will draw lots to determine the order in which they will compete.
51. The duration of the adjudicated rehearsal will be 8 minutes. Competitors may choose to use the time to work on the entire piece they have chosen to conduct, or just a part of it, and should aim to demonstrate both their rehearsal and conducting skills during this time.
52. At the end of Round 2 (Sacred Music: Professional Choir) the National Jury will assign a mark. All fifteen Competitors will progress to Round 3, and the marks for Round 2 and Round 3 will be combined to determine the Competitors who will progress to Round 4 of the competition.
49. Each competitor will conduct an adjudicated rehearsal with professional choir of 16 singers. The professional choir will be familiar with the repertoire prior to the competition and will sing unaccompanied. There will not be a piano accompanist and Competitors should bring their own tuning fork, pitch pipe or similar device for giving pitch.
50. Before the adjudication begins, Competitors will draw lots to determine the order in which they will compete.

52. At the end of Round 2 (Sacred Music: Professional Choir) the National Jury will assign a mark. All fifteen Competitors will progress to Round 3, and the marks for Round 2 and Round 3 will be combined to determine the Competitors who will progress to Round 4 of the competition.
Round 3: UK Women Composers - LICCC Choirs
53. Round 3 (UK Women Composers: LICCC Choirs) will take place on Saturday 2nd November 2024 at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
54. Each competitor will conduct an adjudicated rehearsal on the Commissioned Set Piece and an adjudicated performance of one set piece from the Round 3 (UK Women Composers: LICCC Choirs) Repertoire List.
55. Competitors must prepare the Commissioned Set Piece and all five set pieces on the Round 3 Repertoire List.
56. The adjudicated rehearsals will be with the LICCC choirs, including; Chantage, Coro and other LICCC 2024 Choirs. All of the LICCC Choirs will be familiar with the Set Pieces, and the Commissioned Set Piece, before the competition begins.
57. Competitors will be assigned to conduct a different choir for each of their pieces.
58. At the end of the previous round (Round 2) the Competitors will draw lots to determine which piece each Competitor will conduct in Round 3 (UK Women Composers: LICCC Choirs), and which of the LICCC Choirs each Competitor will be conducting. Drawing lots will also determine the order in which the Competitors will be competing.
59. Before the adjudicated performance of the set piece, Competitors will have a private rehearsal. The assigned choirs will not change between the rehearsal and performance.
60. The duration of the private rehearsal of the Set Piece for Round 3 will be 20 minutes.
61. The duration of the adjudicated rehearsal of the Commissioned Set Piece will be 10 minutes.
62. The adjudicated performance will start at 3.45pm and may be open to members of the public.
63. The results of Round 3 (UK Women Composers: LICCC Choirs) will be announced during the Gala Concert, which starts at 6.00pm on Saturday 2nd November 2024. All competitors must attend the concert and announcement of the results.
64. Five Competitors will be put through to compete in Round 4 (International Choral Works: Grand Final)
54. Each competitor will conduct an adjudicated rehearsal on the Commissioned Set Piece and an adjudicated performance of one set piece from the Round 3 (UK Women Composers: LICCC Choirs) Repertoire List.
55. Competitors must prepare the Commissioned Set Piece and all five set pieces on the Round 3 Repertoire List.
56. The adjudicated rehearsals will be with the LICCC choirs, including; Chantage, Coro and other LICCC 2024 Choirs. All of the LICCC Choirs will be familiar with the Set Pieces, and the Commissioned Set Piece, before the competition begins.

Round 4: International Choral Works - Grand Final
65. Round 4 (International Choral Works: Grand Final) will take place on Sunday 3rd November 2024 at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
66. The Competitors will compete in two adjudicated rehearsals and one adjudicated performance, in front of the International Jury.
67. Each competitor will be required to conduct one Set Piece from the Round 4 Repertoire List, one new Set Piece from the Round 3 Repertoire List that they have not already conducted during the competition, plus the Commissioned Set Piece.
68. The Competitors will conduct these three pieces with three different choirs; Two LICCC Choirs, and the LICCC Massed Choirs.
69. During the Gala Concert, following the announcement of the results of Round 3, the five successful Competitors will draw lots to determine which two Set Pieces each will be conducting, and with which LICCC Choirs. Drawing lots will also determine the order in which the Competitors will compete.
First Adjudicated Rehearsal
70. The first adjudicated rehearsal in Round 4 (International Choral Works: Grand Final) will be on the Set Piece from the Round 4 Repertoire List.
71. The duration of the adjudicated rehearsal will be 20 minutes.
72. Competitors will also be allotted 20 minutes to rehearse in private (not adjudicated) on the other Set Piece from the Round 3 Repertoire List. Both Set Pieces will be conducted later in the adjudicated performance.
Second Adjudicated Rehearsal
73. The second adjudicated rehearsal in Round 4 (International Choral Works: Grand Final) will be on the Commissioned Set Piece.
74. The choir for this adjudicated rehearsal will be the LICCC Massed Choirs, comprised of the combined singers of Chantage, Coro and the other LICCC Choirs.
75. The LICCC Massed Choirs will have learned the Commissioned Set Piece before the competition begins.
76. The duration of the second adjudicated rehearsal will be 10 minutes.
77. The second adjudicated rehearsal will start at 2.45pm and may be open to members of the public.
Adjudicated Performance
78. The adjudicated performance (known as the ‘Grand Final’) will be at 5.30pm on Sunday 3rd November 2024 in front of a public ticketed audience, and will be further live-streamed online via an international streaming service.
79. Competitors will conduct the two Set Pieces only.
80. The two Set Pieces will not be conducted consecutively during the performance.
81. All competitors must attend the announcement of results at the end of the Grand Final.
82. Competitors will be invited on to the stage and the International Jury and competition sponsors will award prizes and certificates.
83. The winner of First Prize will be invited on to the stage to close the competition by giving the world premiere public performance of the Commissioned Set Piece, with the LICCC Massed Choirs.
84. All Competitors who have taken part in LICCC 2024 will be invited to attend a brief photo call on stage after the competition, and to a reception event with the choirs and members of the Jury.
66. The Competitors will compete in two adjudicated rehearsals and one adjudicated performance, in front of the International Jury.

Liabilities and Consent
85. LICCC reserves the right to publicise information about the competitors using the photos, biographies and other media included in the Application Form and its attachments, as well as publicising the results of the competition.
86. LICCC reserves the right to capture photos and record audio and video material throughout the weekend of the competition, and to broadcast this material on Radio, TV and on the Internet.
87. The Competitor accepts without remuneration the recording of the competition for any uses on radio, television and the Internet, live, recorded or in streaming with the exception of commercial exploitation.
88. Videos from the competition will be uploaded to the gallery page of the LICCC website after the event.
89. All expenses: travel, meals and accommodation are the responsibility of the Competitor. LICCC will prepare a list of hotels in London where special prices for competition visitors may be offered.
90. London International Choral Conducting Competition 2024 depends on financial support obtained from national and private sponsors, donors and funding bodies. LICCC, therefore, reserves the right to cancel the competition if the economic support is too uncertain. In the event of cancellation all application fees will be refunded.
86. LICCC reserves the right to capture photos and record audio and video material throughout the weekend of the competition, and to broadcast this material on Radio, TV and on the Internet.
87. The Competitor accepts without remuneration the recording of the competition for any uses on radio, television and the Internet, live, recorded or in streaming with the exception of commercial exploitation.
88. Videos from the competition will be uploaded to the gallery page of the LICCC website after the event.
89. All expenses: travel, meals and accommodation are the responsibility of the Competitor. LICCC will prepare a list of hotels in London where special prices for competition visitors may be offered.
90. London International Choral Conducting Competition 2024 depends on financial support obtained from national and private sponsors, donors and funding bodies. LICCC, therefore, reserves the right to cancel the competition if the economic support is too uncertain. In the event of cancellation all application fees will be refunded.
