The 2018 Competition

These pages detail the inaugural London International Choral Conducting Competition which took place at London’s renowned Royal Academy of Music on Saturday and Sunday 20 & 21 October 2018.

Curated by Coro and Chantage, two of London’s premier chamber choirs, the two-day event revolved around two interlocking threads:
​

• a Gala Concert by Chantage, Coro and our Guest Choir, FREIA, in the splendid Duke’s Hall at the Royal Academy of Music
• a high quality competition for emerging choral conductors. The winner, chosen by a distinguished international jury and the choirs themselves, will receive a valuable cash prize.

This ground-breaking initiative, the UK’s first ever choral conducting competition, will lend a significant boost to a conductor in the early stages of their career, and is open to international entries.

The competition consisted of two rounds

• A video round, adjudicated by three judges. Participants were invited to apply by sending in a video. 
• A Grand Final, in which six participants competed over the course of the competition weekend, adjudicated by an international jury of five judges.

LICCC 2018 Prizes

• First Prize – £5000 (GBP)
• Second Prize – £1000 (GBP) generously sponsored by Stevens and Bolton LLP, plus a weekend pass and accommodation at the Association of British Choral Directors annual convention 2019 at the Birmingham Conservatoire
• Additional special prizes from the competition sponsors including rehearsal observation sessions with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the London Symphony Chorus and the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus.
